Starting small with a one-inch frame š¼
How I'm making a big leap in visibility by starting with a small, wobbly video
As I navigate the big and often scary adventure/assignment-from-my-soul to prioritize creative expression and step into more visibility, I figure itās wise to start with a small assignment. So Iām sharing one short impromptu writing piece in one wobbly, unedited video. Just one small act of showing up.
This week I had the pleasure of doing Amanda Retaās writing workshop at The Peace Sanctuary. It was a lot of fun and very well done. Amanda facilitated a writing assignment based on Anne Lamottās work on āSmall Assignmentsā and the āone-inch frameā where we each blindly selected a 1ā picture she had snipped from a magazine and free wrote for 10 minutes about the image. My piece ended up being this poem called Boundary.
Amazing how as much as weāre taught to focus on big goals, itās the small acts of showing up that are actually how Life unfolds. Interesting too how small assignments can feel like a giant leap. š
Boundary
by Kai Madrone
Maybe she is praying. Maybe she is protecting herself. Maybe these things aren't so different. Saying no to what is outside, saying yes to what lies within. The simplicity of her gesture is strong. Thou. Shalt. Not. Pass. A gentle fierceness. She knows what she knows. She is who she is. That is enough.
